Aberdeen is Scotland’s third largest city and Europe’s energy capital - a place with historic charm, a thriving economy and cosmopolitan community of some 220,000 people. Aberdeen's buildings included locally quarried grey granite, which can sparkle like silver because of its high mica content. The city has a long, sandy coastline and a marine climate. Aberdeen has far milder winter temperatures than one might expect for its northern location, although statistically it is the coldest city in the UK. The city began as two separate burghs: Old Aberdeen at the mouth of the river Don; and New Aberdeen, fishing and trading settlement, where the Denburn waterway entered the river Dee estuary. Christianity is the main religion practised in the city. Aberdeen's largest denominations are the Church of Scotland and the Roman Catholic Church, both with numerous churches across the city, with the Scottish Episcopal Church having the third-largest number.
Aberdeen received Royal Burgh status from David I of Scotland, Transfiguring the city economically. The city's two universities, the University of Aberdeen, established in 1495, and Robert Gordon University, which was awarded university status in 1992, make Aberdeen the educational centre of the north-east of Scotland. Aberdeen has won the Britain in Bloom competition a record-breaking ten times and hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, a major international event which attracts up to 1000 of the much talented young performing arts companies. Aberdeen is locally governed by the Aberdeen City Council, which consists of forty-three councillors who represent the city's wards and is headed by the Lord Provost.
Thanks to advances in science and technology, the research- based pharmaceutical industry is entering an exciting new era in medicines development. Research methods are evolving and we have many promising prospects on the horizon – from the possibilities offered by personalised medicines, to the potential offered by harnessing the power of big data. The innovative pharmaceutical industry is driven by, and drives, medical progress. It aims to turn fundamental research into innovative treatments that are widely available and accessible to patients.
The research–based pharmaceutical industry can play a critical role in restoring Europe to growth and ensuring future competitiveness in an advancing global economy. In 2015 it invested an estimated € 31,500 million in R&D in Europe. It employs directly some 725,000 people and generates three to four times more employment indirectly.
In 2015 the Brazilian and Chinese markets grew by 14.0% and 7.0% respectively, compared with an average market growth of 5.9% for the total European market.
The pharmaceutical industry is one of the UK’s most valuable assets. Through researching and developing innovative medicines for patients, across a huge range of diseases and conditions, the industry makes an essential contribution to the health and wellbeing of people in the UK and across the world

The contribution of engineering and engineers to the UK economy should not be underestimated. The number of engineering enterprises in the UK has grown by 2.0% over a 12 month period to March 2013. However, this growth has not been even across the country, with London growing by 5.3%. Engineering enterprises employ 5.4 million workers, which is a fifth (19.3%) of all people employed in UK enterprises. Finally, engineering enterprises had a collective turnover of £1.17 trillion. This is a 6.7% increase over 12 months and 9.0% higher than the start of the recession, representing a quarter (24.9%) of the turnover of all UK enterprises. In comparison, the retail sector turns over less than a third (30%) of the engineering sector.
Government continues to offer strong support for science, engineering and research. Recognising that world class research plays a key role in economic growth and improvement to the health and wellbeing of society, the Government continues to protect the cash that has been ring fenced for science for the financial year 2015/16
The UK punches above its weight as a research nation. While we represent just 0.9% of global population, 3.2% of R&D expenditure and 4.1% of researchers, we account for 11.6% of citations, 15.9% of the world’s most highly-cited articles and 30 of the top 200 universities in the world. Within engineering, there is an equally good story to tell: the UK ranks 3rd in the G8 for number of citations and 2nd in the EU27. For number of citations per billion dollars GDP, the UK ranks 1st in the G8 showing excellent value for money
