Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslo Fjord. Oslo organizes both a county and a municipality. It was founded in the year 1040, and recognized as a "kaupstad" or exchanging place in 1048 by King Harald III, the city was raised to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V around 1300. Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is a significant centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The population of the city's urban area was 942,084.
